Welcome Week features a wide variety of events to create an action-packed week for first year undergraduate students. There are many large events that are held every year. To keep up to date on all of Welcome Week, like us on Facebook and Instagram @macsciwelcomeweek! Also, be sure to check out the official McMaster Welcome Week Website here. In the interim, here's a brief overview of what you can look forward to! To accommodate for everyone's varying time zones and schedules, you will notice that events are being offered at a few different times. We will also be releasing many video initiatives for you to view and enjoy on your own time throughout the week!

School-Wide Social: Mystery Mission Impossible – Monday August 31st @ 8:00-9:00 PM

The title says about as much as we can tell you… sign-up for this event and compete against other students in small groups to crack the mystery first. It won’t be easy, but we can guarantee you don’t want to miss out!

Science Faculty Day Educational Session - Tuesday September 1st @ 8:00-9:00 AM and 2:00-3:00 PM

Come hear from the  Dean of Science, the McMaster Science Society, and Student Success Centre as we welcome you to McMaster!  Participate in personal Q&A’s with our team of eager reps, win prizes from our virtual scavenger hunt, and compete against groups of other first year students in a variety of challenges during our Science Olympics!

Science Faculty Day Community Building & Social – Tuesday September 1st @ 11:00 AM-12:00 PM and 5:00-6:00 PM

Regardless of your interest, we have something for you at this event. Join us in a Zumba session, view some online tours of our beautiful campus, do Arts & Crafts with other students and reps, and participate in our online escape room! It’s High School Musical themed, as a tribute to our Science Welcome Week 2020 theme -- Sci School Musical!

Mind Mapping and Napkin Sketching Event – Wednesday September 2nd @ 11:00AM-12:00 PM and 5:00-6:00 PM (pending approval)

Stressed about the transition to university and the prospect of making life decisions? We’d love to have you join us for this unique and fun event that promotes mental health and well-being! We will have small groups participating in this guided activity where you can create three mind maps and three napkin sketches of your own to practice deferring judgement, allowing your mind to ideate freely, and be surprised at the results!

Science Faculty Social Night – Thursday September 3rd @ 8:00-9:00 PM

This will be a lowkey social evening for you to relax and meet new individuals in the Faculty! We will be hosting a League of Legends Tournament with prizes, chill pop-in and talk with various online games and prizes, a Coffee House where first years and reps can chill and perform, as well as multiple movie screenings for you to enjoy!

Science Faculty Fest – Friday September 4th @ 2:00-5:00 PM

Join us for this event to chat one-on-one with some of your professors, members of the McMaster Science Society, and Welcome Week Representatives about all of your questions and concerns! In addition, we’ll be running program-specific mock lectures with some of your first year Science professors, Q&A’s with them, skills workshops with our reps, a FUN keynote speaker and the opportunity to help us with a cool lab activity while chatting about research!

First Year No Fear! – Monday September 7th @ 8:00-9:00 AM, 2:00-3:00 PM, and 5:00-6:00 PM

Join us for a 3-part event focusing on getting through and thriving in first semester! Reps will be providing some wisdom on maintaining healthy habits, networking, programs, studying and managing virtual classes.

All About Your Profs  – Monday, September 7th @ 11:00AM-12:00PM

Want to meet some of your professors? This drop-in event is open for you to learn a bit more about some Level 1 Science professors and to ask them your questions!

Colouring 4 A Cause  – Monday September 7th @ 8:00-9:00 PM

If you enjoy a relaxing atmosphere with some colouring and chatting, this event is for you! First years and reps will have access to colouring pages and colour while chatting about transitioning into university and answering any questions. Each fully coloured sheet can be submitted to the event hosts, where they will be matched with $1 to fundraise for the Hamilton Mental Health Outreach (HMHO), a non-profit organization that aims to help Hamiltonians facing mental health challenges!

Put a Finger Down: First Day of Class Edition – Tuesday September 8th @ 5:00-6:00 PM

After experiencing the first day of classes, this chill session will allow you to debrief and have an open discussion about the day. Beginning with a mini game of “Put a finger down if you…” (yes, based on the TikTok Trend), once all prompts are read by a rep, the call will be free for any questions or sharing of interesting stories and struggles.

Adjustin’ and Mythbustin’ – Tuesday September 8th @ 8:00-9:00 PM

This event is going to bust some myths you may have heard about university and more specifically Science programs. Using the reactions on Zoom, you can share if you agree or disagree with the myth. Related to the myths, these statements can open up conversation for you to gain more information on Academic Advising, approaching professors and TAs, and more.

Chill, Chat and Have Your Questions Answered! – Wednesday September 9th @ 5:00-6:00 PM

This is a laid back check-in event for you to reflect on your first day of classes and ask any questions you may have. There will be opportunities for all first years to introduce themselves, join discussions prompted by reps, ask questions, and join breakout rooms to ask program/course specific questions.

Trivia Night – Wednesday September 9th @ 8:00-9:00 PM

Join in for some fun and trivia surrounding topics of video games, superheroes, The Office, and The Hunger Games!! This event is open to all first year students and will be an individual, low-key event that you can do without needing to engage in any online calls. Test your knowledge on various categories and win some prizes!
